What is Botox?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Botox injections are noted primarily to reduce facial wrinkles. They also treat conditions such as neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), an overactive bladder, and lazy eye. Botox injections may also help prevent chronic migraines.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. Once this happens, the injected muscle cannot contract, which then causes wrinkles to relax and soften.Â
The effects typically last 3 – 6 months before the muscle action begins to show again. This movement results in the lines and wrinkles returning and will need to be treated again.Â
What is the Botox Process?
Many people do not feel much discomfort during this quick procedure. However, you may want your skin numbed beforehand, which may be done in one of many ways, such as topical anesthesia, ice, or vibration anesthesia, which uses massage to reduce discomfort.
Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours. This may help prevent the toxin from spreading to a different area. You can return to your normal activities right after the procedure.
